In our continuing series on home modifications we look at electrical services.  When modifying the home for safety and comfort it should be remembered that simply turning on a light or charging a phone can suddenly become difficult.

Positioning and types of electrical services are an important consideration.  When it comes to light switches these should give ease of access and be located at 900-1100mm from the finished floor level (FFL).  As a general rule, domestic areas should provide for illumination levels of 300lux.

For general power outlets (GPOs) electricians should allow extra wiring to allow future positioning up to 600mm from FFL for easier access for someone who has difficulty bending down. Kitchen areas require additional GPOs to be located within arm’s length at the front of the kitchen counter, for example, 300mm from the front of the kitchen bench.
