An 18-episode podcast series created for families impacted by childhood-acquired spinal cord injury and dysfunction (SCI/D) has just been released.
Called 40 Voices, and hosted by SpineCare Foundation, the series dives into the important topics that families face every day, from managing health to transitioning into independent living.
The series began on World Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day, September 5, and will run until October 31. Two episodes will be released every week, at 7.30pm on Thursdays.
What will the podcast cover?
Each episode of 40 Voices is about 20 minutes long and packed with real-life stories from parents, young adults, and experts who have been there. Whether you’re interested in learning about bladder and bowel care, scoliosis surgery, or even planning family vacations, the podcast has something for you.
Episode 1 features a welcome and series overview with SpineCare’s Chairperson Sam Frain and GP Gillian Moreland. Gillian is also a parent to a young adult who sustained a spinal cord injury at the age of one. She will share her family’s experience managing the condition through the growing years. The episode highlights the supports recommended for other families early in their journey.
Episode 2 will look at the functions of the spinal cord and the implications of spinal cord injury. Maya Dove, an actor, model, and youth caseworker who sustained her spinal cord injury as an infant, will share her personal journey of growing up with SCI, understanding the condition, managing daily life, and will offer invaluable advice for parents on how to best support their children.
Other episodes will feature a para-athlete, an adaptive mountain biker, a sexologist, an artist and more – all with their own unique stories and perspectives to share.
