The inaugural ATSA Independent Living Expo is set to open next week on Tuesday, August 27 at the National Convention Centre, Canberra.

Held in conjunction with iCREATe, the international Convention of Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology, the expo will take place over two days and is set to feature the latest in AT innovations relating to the disability and aged care sectors.

Speakers in the expo’s seminar program include Dr Lloyd Walker, director assistive technology at the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS); Chris Sparks OAM – president of the Physical Disability Council NSW (PDCN); Kath Hamilton CEO of loop+; Joana Santiago, OT and clinical educator at Medifab and David Sinclair EO of ATSA.

There will be more than 50 exhibitors at the show, including many local small businesses, international manufacturers and a number of not-for-profit organisations.

Quantum RLV will be demonstrating the OrCam MyEye, a portable device with a small camera that can attach to the side of a pair of glasses. By using hand gestures or the touchbar located down the length of the device, it is able to read documents via OCR (text to speech), recognise people’s faces, identify money, provide the time and identify barcodes on food items. OrCam does not require an internet connection to access any of its features.

A number of products from Specialised Wheelchair Company will also be on display at the expo including the versatile Stabilo range with the Stabilo vacuum positioning cushions designed to offer support when out of a wheelchair.

Canberra based supplier Lightning Mobility will also be at the show, and is set to give away a $1000 voucher for resort-style accommodation at the Tathra Beach House Holiday Apartments. To enter their competition, simply register for ATSA Independent Living Expo and visit their stand.
