The Museum of Play and Art (MoPA) has just opened in Geelong, Victoria and it is almost completely accessible with ramps to most exhibits. Co-director, Thomas Mahon told F2L the museum is 75 per cent accessible, “apart from a smaller gated area on the second floor with access via stairs and the space is wheelchair friendly. All main areas are large and flat and we have installed ramps throughout to ensure ease of access from the front to the rear of the museum.”

The museum was envisaged by Mahon and his wife Billie Georgieff with inspiration from some of the world’s leading children’s museums with exhibits created by local artists and designers.

The heritage building is home to an impressive collection of fully immersive exhibits from sensory play to digital experiences. Among these are a play area with giant foam blocks with large scale faces set into the wall and a hand-built climbing cityscape complete with hidey-holes. Lego lovers will find plenty to create and play with in the Zoom Room and there is also an interactive digital art wall. Aspiring artists can get creative on the MoPA Art Car, a VW bug remodeled as a canvas.

This unique creative space caters to children aged 1-10 years with soft play areas for 0-2 year olds. There are two party rooms, pram parking, accessible toilets and change facilities.

The exhibits have been developed in line with the Early Learning Framework for Kindergarten and the Victorian Curriculum for Children.

There are free-play sessions during school terms and the museum caters for birthday parties, education programs for kindergarten and school excursions with After Dark functions for adults starting in February.
