Disability care provider Focus Care Adelaide has launched Project Shed, giving those with disability the opportunity to acquire real-time automotive transferable skills.
The purpose-built training facility, comprises a fully operational automotive workshop where people with disabilities can engage, have fun, access affordable programs and learn valuable transferable skills while building confidence and expanding their social networks.
As a multi-purpose community centre, the Project Shed also serves as a vital resource for people seeking pathways to employment. One 17-year-old male student with autism who was disengaged from school leaving his parents at a loss for what to do next, has undergone a remarkable journey. He has moved on from complete social isolation to active engagement, motivation and a current pursuit of a Cert 2 in Automotive, well on his way to becoming a qualified mechanic.
Focus Care Adelaide operations and community engagement manager, Brenton Munzer said the project helps young people gain skills they never thought they could possess. “Our environment offers safety, support, and the opportunity to make a difference. Project Shed is a blend of an activity centre and a training facility that is unique in Adelaide, that has done some amazing work including transforming a Hummer,” he said.
The centre is open to NDIS providers and participants.
