The Federal government is inviting people to have their say on Australia’s Disability Strategy 2021–2031, with public consultation now open via the DSS Engage website.

Easy Read and Auslan versions are available, and you can share your views through a questionnaire.

What is the Disability Strategy?

Australia’s Disability Strategy sets out the framework for disability policy in Australia. It was developed by all levels of government alongside people with disability, their families, carers, and representatives.

The call for feedback comes hot on the heels of the release in recent weeks of the government’s response to the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability .

Minister for Social Services Amanda Rishworth said the review of the strategy fulfils a commitment made by governments following a recommendation in the Royal Commission’s final report.

“Our Government is committed to progressing the recommendations of the Disability Royal Commission and importantly making progress towards a more inclusive and accessible community and society for all,” Rishworth said.

“The strategy is a crucial part of improving the lives of people with disability. Since the strategy was launched in 2021, we’ve heard ongoing feedback from the disability community, and this formal consultation will give all Australians the opportunity to tell us what parts of the strategy are working and what needs to change. I encourage all Australians to be part of the conversation to create an inclusive community for a better future.”

The updated strategy is expected be released by the end of 2024. Go to engage.dss.gov.au for more information – consultation closes at 5pm AEST Friday 6 September 2024.
