Disability housing provider and advocacy organisation YoungCare has welcomed Queensland MP Amanda Camm for an exclusive tour of its inclusive living facilities.
Camm, the Minister for Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety and the Prevention of Domestic and Family Violence, stopped by the newly acquired development in Southport, on the Gold Coast, on 22 January.
Camm said YoungCare is changing the lives of young people with disability.
“These retrofitted apartments give young people living with a disability a place of their own, it gives them the independence every young person craves and where better to have that than overlooking the beautiful Broadwater in Southport.
“The Southport apartments, along with the other homes they have built and will build into the future are making a real difference and as the new Minister for Disability Services I want to thank them for their hard work.”
She said the new housing aligns with the State Government’s priorities, including its $2 billion Housing Investment Fund.
“I look forward to working with YoungCare to find better housing outcomes for all Queenslanders including people living with disabilities and making Queensland a more inclusive and accessible state.”
Clare Stewart, the incoming CEO of YoungCare, said she was honoured to join the organisation and contribute to an equitable and accessible future.
“By providing individuals with their own homes in the heart of the community, we’re not only offering a roof over their heads, but a pathway to social connection and greater inclusion. It is great to have the ongoing support of the State Government and we look forward to working with them going forward,” Stewart said.
“The Southport development is a powerful example of the type of accommodation Youngcare strives to offer—homes where people with complex disabilities are empowered to live independently, make their own choices, and experience an improved quality of life, both mentally and emotionally.”
The Southport facility is a mixed-tenure specialist disability accommodation, according to YoungCare’s Head of Development and Housing, Tim Lambert.
It features 10 SDA units with a mix of one and two bedroom units, built to the highest accessibility standards. Common areas are all accessible, including a pool, gym and BBQ area.
“These 10 units will become the ultimate homes for people with severe and permanent disability looking to access the best the Gold Coast has to offer all year round,” Lambert said.
