Physicist Professor Stephen Hawking will deliver his first lecture to Australia from the UK on April 26. ‘An Evening with Stephen Hawking’ is being held at the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall on April 26. His lecture will be beamed live from the University of Cambridge where Hawking is director of research at the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. His daughter, Lucy Hawking, will be on-stage to give a brief introduction to his life and work.
Hawking recently agreed to serve as an advisory board member at the University of New South Wales Big Questions Institute, a new research centre devoted to investigating the big questions of science.
Hawking was diagnosed with a form of Motor Neurone Disease as a young man and has defied the odds, never letting his physical restrictions limit his imagination or intellect, using a computerised voice system for communication. A part of his life story was recently depicted in the film, The Theory of Everything.
