A new app is available to help people with disability modify their homes. The first-of-its-kind DIYmodify app will help the consumer makes decisions around purchasing five common home modifications including grab rails and handheld showers. The app was developed by the University of New South Wales (UNSW) and funded by the NSW Department of Community Services. The app links directly to the UNSW’s HMinfo clearing house website which provides the latest information and research on home modifications. The app is free and available for iPhone/iPad and Android devices.
“Overwhelmingly, people want to stay in their homes rather than go into care,” HMinfo Clearinghouse director, associate professor Catherine Bridge said. “When people complete their own home modifications, they can choose the products they want and have control over the process.”
The DIYmodify app was designed with input from people with disability. Co-designer, NSW Physical Disability Council president said employing tradespeople to install home modifications isn’t always financially viable for people with disability. “The app takes you through how to select products and how to install them in an easy step-by-step way.”
UNSW research shows more than 15,000 home modifications are undertaken by people with disability and older Australians each year in NSW.
