NDIA releases first insights into the AT market identifying potential opportunities for the business sector.
The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has developed a series of Market Insights into the assistive technology (AT) sector. The information is designed to give providers a better understanding of specific submarkets, key trends and market opportunities. It shows participant purchasing and market supply data and how participant choice and control is shaping the NDIS marketplace. As well it reveals opportunities for business growth across regions and product categories.
The NDIS AT market is forecast to reach $1 billion once the NDIS is fully implemented. Currently one in five participants purchase an AT product or service, with personal mobility and care products accounting for over 70 per cent of AT expenditure, followed by those with an intellectual disability accounting for 20 per cent of expenditure.
As the NDIS grows the AT landscape is also changing. For the year ending June 30, 2017, 13,000 NDIS participants received AT from 800 registered providers who delivered more than $48 million in supports and services.
In the 2016-2017 financial year, three per cent of funds were spent on AT, and as more participants enter the NDIS demand is expected to increase. About one in three registered NDIS providers are operating in the AT sector with the number growing 38 per cent in Q2 June 2017.
