Do you or someone you know need a custom solution for an unmet need? Do you want to use your knowledge to make an impact? Then, Makeathon could be for you.
By joining the TOM Makeathon program you will be part of a team to design and build a custom prototype that solves a challenge faced by someone with a disability. The project involves creating assistive technology solutions for people with disability or submitting an accessibility challenge that requires a solution.
It represents an opportunity for ‘Makers’ that includes healthcare workers, engineers, designers, hobbyists and problem solvers and ‘Need-Knowers’ such as people with lived experience of disability, their family, friends, carers or support workers, who have a challenge that AT could help solve.
More applications are wanted, particularly for occupational therapists, to participate and add their knowledge and expertise to assist in customised AT design and creation.
Recent prototypes include robotic arms, powered crutches, wheelchair wheel cleaners and bespoke exercise machines. The intellectual property for every product is shared through open-source digital files, so others can replicate or iterate it.
The Makeathon weekend will be held in Melbourne on September 17-18 at Monash University Woodside Building for Technology and Design. It is free to participate and fully catered.
