The Queensland Government is trialling new audio technology on its city bus network for the vision impaired. The Step-Hear system provides blind and vision impaired people with audible messages that outline bus station facilities, locations and route details for any given stop. The user is alerted to the location of speakers that are installed in the King George Square bus station by either using a smartphone app or dedicated wrist band which vibrates when in proximity. Users can then activate the audio message using the devices.
As well as navigating the station, users can also connect with the Step-Hear system operating in the Queen Street Mall that gives access to shopping and cafes.
