It’s been a winning week for Australian Para-athletes in Paris.
The Paris Paralympic Games only began a week ago, but Australian athletes have already shown their dominance. We currently sit at sixth on the medal tally, with eight gold medals, nine silver and 12 bronze for a total of 29 medals.
Australian Para-athletes have won their new bling in swimming, cycling, athletics, table tennis, and rowing. Our first gold came on day one of the competition, when Thomas Gallagher took out the Men’s 50m Freestyle S10.
Flagbearer and wheelchair racer Madison de Rozario OAM won bronze in the women’s T54 5000m.
But there was heartbreak this week too, as Jaryd Clifford and guides Matt Clarke and Tim Logan were disqualified from the bronze medal position in the T13 5000m race for vision-impaired athletes after a tether release issue.
But there’s plenty more to go. The Paris Paralympic Games run until 8 September, with more medal chances for Australia in the coming week and a variety of sports coming up including wheelchair fencing, Para powerlifting, Para equestrian, goalball and more swimming events.
