Umbrella School of Music has opened auditions for buddies to take part in its groundbreaking production of Camp Rock: The One-Act Edition.
This innovative musical initiative celebrates inclusivity by pairing performers with and without disability to share roles for a unique and heart-warming theatrical experience.
The production was officially launched on Sunday 23 June with a workshop that gave participants the opportunity to sing, dance and act from the show and learn how this special production model would work.
Ingrid Bass, principal facilitator at Umbrella School of Music, said the workshop was a “joyous event”, with participants aged eight to 57 singing, acting, dancing and connecting with each other.
Willoughby City Council Mayor Tanya Taylor, whose son took part in the workshop, said: “The Camp Rock inclusive musical is a wonderful initiative that brings people with and without disabilities together– to learn from each other and be inspired to be their best. My son totally enjoyed the workshop experience and is excited about auditioning for the show.”
After the workshop, 20 children and adults with disability expressed interest to be in the show and proceed to auditions – however, only seven buddies, all girls and women without disability, signed up to perform alongside them. The School is now searching for teen boys and young men without disability who would like to be buddies for the production.
Auditions are set to take place on Sunday, July 28 and August 4. They will focus on singing, acting, and dancing in a fun and supportive environment to ensure all participants feel comfortable and with the least nerves possible.
Bass said the production’s buddy system would enhance the production and promote “meaningful connections and a caring community spirit where all are supported and celebrated for what they have to offer.”

Rehearsal Details
● Dates: Sundays 3-6 pm from August 2024 to March 2025
● Locations: Forestville for the first 5 weeks, then Artarmon for the remainder of the rehearsal period.
