The Real Insurance Spring Cycle is being held on Sunday October 19. Riding in the Spring Cycle to help ten other kids with disabilities to ride a bike for the first time is 12-year old Nathan (pictured). Nathan has Down syndrome (trisomy 21) that affects his speech and gross and fine motor skills. This means he cannot keep up with people walking fast and is slow when it comes to walking down steps.

After trying different bikes and trying to teach Nathan how to balance and push the pedals without success, Nathan was referred to TAD Disability Services for a Freedom Wheels assessment. His Freedom Wheels bike has modifications including outrigger wheels to help with balance, foot cups to keep his feet on the pedals and a high riser on the back so his mother can push or stop him with bending over and hurting his back. Now Nathan is able to ride by himself giving him confidence and independence.

Each year around 10,000 riders of all ages push off from North Sydney, over the Harbour Bridge and onto Pyrmont or to a festival finish at Sydney Olympic Park where free face painting, games and music are on the fun program.

TAD Disability Services is the only charity in NSW that designs and builds personalised custom equipment to enable people with disability to lead more independent lives.
