Deaf in Dance – Brisbane
A deaf dance group from Far North Queensland which uses vibration to sense the rhythms of traditional music is being celebrated in the State Library of Queensland.
Deaf in Dance explores the 27-year history of the Deaf Indigenous Dance Group (DIDG) and features artworks, performances and digital stories, together with a collection of narrative portraits of the group from award-winning photojournalist Sean Davey.
The showcase has been created with a focus on accessible design, with Auslan tours held monthly.
Highlights include: A video of DIDG’s performance at Sydney’s Dance Rites 2023, newly commissioned interviews with DIDG members, large-scale reproductions of artworks created by DIDG members and custom tactile artwork from First Nations artist Bree Buttenshaw.
The exhibition is part of the Queensland Government’s 10-year Creative Together strategy to elevate First Nations culture and storytellers on the global stage ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games.
