The 2022 International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is December 3, that recognises the 4.4 million Australians with disability.
As announced by the United Nations, IDPwD’s theme for 2022 is ‘Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world’. It brings a focus on how society can become more inclusive through the removal of physical, technological and attitudinal barriers for people with disability.
The aim of the IDPwD is to challenge perceptions and attitudes, and work towards a more inclusive, accessible and equitable society.
2022 Australian of the year, Dylan Alcott, said “it’s an important day because we get to celebrate people with disability for who they are and what they can do”.
Anyone can get involved by hosting or attending an event, sharing stories or messages online, taking action in a workplace, school, or community. There is a range of printable products, digital resources and social media tiles available on the website to use, promote or decorate events.
Earlier this year IDPwD supported the 2022 Focus on Ability Short Film Festival. Filmmakers were encouraged to showcase the abilities of people with disability and tell stories through film.
