Telstra has announced a new project, designed to improve the game-day experience for AFL fans who are blind or visually impaired.  The 5G Touch and Track is a 5G enabled tablet that translates live AFL into a haptic experience.

The Telstra prototype has been developed with start-up, Field of Vision, to create a more immersive, interactive and enjoyable experience, so fans who are visually impaired can track the on-field action with their fingertips.

It is hoped a more refined product will be available in time for the 2023 AFL Grand Final.

Telstra sports technology lead, Chris Harrop said, “Telstra is the technology and innovation partner for Marvel Stadium, where we are currently piloting this technology. Our ambition is to eventually offer the 5G Touch and Track to visually impaired fans at stadiums across the country”.

Reflecting on his experience with the first 5G Touch and Track prototype, AFL Blind player and fan Shaun Keath, said it was something he never thought would be around in his time. “It’s a game changer and is going to make sport a lot more inclusive and accessible and it’s great for the community.”

Working closely with supporters that includes Vision Australia, AFL and AFL Blind, the user experience will be at the forefront of the prototyping process.
