Some beach views in NSW are now more easily accessible for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. Lake Macquarie Council on the Central Coast recently completed work on an innovative pathway with a view of Blacksmiths Beach and surrounding dunes. It gives the community, including wheelchair users and those with mobility issues a smoother approach to the viewing areas.
The pathway is also environmentally friendly, constructed from recycled plastics and cement mix that is intended to provide a longer lifespan than the traditional timber raised boardwalk used commonly in beachside locations around the country.
The council is now looking at using recycled plastic material in future beach projects and is currently investigating the replacement of the adjoining timber viewing platform in a similar product.
