The Sydney Theatre Company and Queensland Theatre co-production of the Pulitzer prize-winning and Tony-nominated Broadway play, Cost of Living, will be performed at Sydney’s Wharf Theatre, from July 18.
This Australian premiere production of life in an increasingly inaccessible world was written by former carer turned playwright, Martyna Majok. The play is about the need to care, or be cared for, no matter the distance that age, race and disability might place between us.
Majok draws on her lived experience as she invites audiences into the intimate spaces of two relationships. Ani, a woman with an acquired disability, reconnects with her estranged husband Eddie who is battling feelings of guilt and loneliness. John, a wealthy Princeton student with cerebral palsy, hires Jess, a woman juggling multiple jobs just to stay afloat, as his carer.
Through a series of stirring vignettes the play paints a vivid portrait of austerity in the 21st century.
Cost of Living plays at Wharf 1 theatre from July 18 – August 18, 2024.
A Relaxed Performance on August 11 features an environment for audiences with sensory considerations. Auditorium doors remain open, some noise and movement is tolerated and patrons are free to come and go during the performance. House lights remain at low level and a quiet space is made available should it be necessary to leave the performance.
There will be captioned performances on August 13 & 17; an audio described performance
on August 6 and an Auslan performance on August 8.
