The Gold Coast’s iconic Surfers Paradise beach will be accessible to everyone when beach wheelchairs, Mobi Mats, mobile hoist and a team of volunteers get together for an October 5 launch.
Surfers Paradise Surf Living Saving Club (SP SLSC) and Volunteering Gold Coast have partnered to kick off the Accessible Beaches Project. The project was a dream-come-true for the club after it received the beach mats some time ago, but was unable to use them due to lack of resources. “Now, in collaboration with Volunteering Gold Coast, we are not only able to make everything accessible for everybody but we can also make the world of difference to many people who have not been able to access the beach,” SLSC president, Trevor Hendy said.
The sturdy mats provide easy access to the water’s edge, securely pegged into the sand, creating a smooth surface for the mobility impaired, those with difficulty walking or who have a pram. A mobile hoist will also be available if required.
However, volunteers are needed to ensure the project is sustainable and volunteers will receive onsite training, a uniform, meals, certificate and honorary SP SLSC membership.
