Wheelchair racing legend Kurt Fearnley has done it again. He took line honours for the 11th time winning the GIO Oz Day 10k international wheelchair race in Sydney on Australia Day in a new track record time of 19 minutes and 36 seconds. Coming in close second was Sho Watanabe from Japan with Jake Lappin from Australia finishing in third place.
Speaking to the media after the race Fearnley said: “This race started my career as a 14-year old athlete and I am thrilled that’s it has come this far as well as also beating last year’s track record time.”
Madison de Rozario from New South Wales secured her third GIO Oz Day win in the Open Women’s Division in an unprecedented track record time of 23 minutes and 03 seconds. Six Australian juniors also made their mark on local soil. In the under 18’s category Sam Rizzo won the Junior Championship, followed by Bradley Pemberton and Gregory Luff.
